Very nice windsurf day, arriving mid day ish, with Squiz Neil, Al, Rog either rigging or sailed. Squiz guinae pigged for me. He planed sometimes and stalled sometimes. I really wanted to rig 7.8m and took over an hour to decide, as the wind was up then down, crazy. Went for 8.6 Savage Gaastra which is a great rotational sail but unlike Gaastra marketing bumph, I think it overpowers quickly when set at recommended settings. I hate it on rough water because the centre of effort floats so much as 8.6 is large sail for no cams. The sea was lumpy, but sailed off the shore planning nicely with everyone else having a great time. Andy M and Mark Swain also turned up with Ian. Big guys on 7.5 + down to a wave head sailing a 5.2 with a stubby board. I was off / on plane for the first hour and got very tired jumping in/out harness, as my boom was high. Gybing on the outside was better for me as the river produced some large swells but shore side was light and bumpy. The river was rough and went thru with no wind a few times was a pain.
However the wind turned up, as I was getting fed up and knackered balancing the sail. Lucky it has an adjustable outhaul which I adjusted several times. Early runs were 22kts as I was pinching up both ways as we were sailing wind with tide. Squiz and 2 others went very high which was a good call , but I had lost interest by then. The wind freshened and I started blasting which was great. We shouldn't go out that far really but with the board flying I didn't want to stop. Mexome was peeing all over me earlier on, now it was game on. We had some great mashups as he tried to shake off my trade mark yeehaa calls. One long mashup nearly went to the shipping lane as I tried to smother him with the big sheet. That produced my days max 24.91kts and it could have been more except I had no control holding the board down and sheeting in. I kept having to sheet out when faced with a monster wave. We went thru the river flat out where I had a big spin out. Brilliant and lost 100m downwind on that run to prevent an overtake.
Swainey now turned up and the battles continued and although pretty even on his old but fast Fanatic he couldn’t get past either. Our runs didn't produce great speed because unlike duels with Andy, Swainey and I swerve around so much it’s more like a fighter plane dogfight to drive each other down wind then flick up.
Exhaustion set in as the wind was now up and was overpowered. I am shocked the 8.6 stayed OK at 20kts without cams and on flat water would have been great. Maybe I have been changing down too early for better control.
The North Shoxs was now bottoming out thru the river and when tanking up wind, so wish it had more than the 25mm travel, as it’s a bit unnerving when it happens. Had a new (ex demo) Gaastra dedicated mast after breaking a Unifibre at the joint. Although it sets OK, I think the 75% mast is a little too soft for my body weight. Looking up I could see it bending leewards instead of the sail top twisting around it, costing me speed. Guess it can’t cope with 20kts and 100kg. Great day with Squiz bleeding every ounce out of the day, sailing way off shore sometimes.
Leaping out of the harness so many times made my heel punch a crack / hole in the JP146 Excite Pro Carbon board. This will def be a dig out / drain water repair, as I sailed all day like it. Air and water is still draining 24 hrs on....
